Celebrating Quality Sleep: Novel Treatment Option for Serious Sleep Disorder

Last year, the fifth-annual World Sleep Day spread the awareness of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a prevalent problem worldwide but still very much under the radar.

In conjunction with World Sleep Day which falls on 15th March this year, Theravent Inc. is pleased to announce that its proprietary Provent® Sleep Apnea Therapy, a novel and non-invasive treatment for OSA, is now available throughout Singapore and Malaysia. Cleared by the US FDA in 2008, it is imported and distributed by Somnotec (S) Pte Ltd in Singapore, and Somnotec (M) Pte Ltd in Malaysia.

Getting to Know Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

People who suffer from OSA stop breathing for ten seconds or longer, in most cases, hundreds of times each night. They stop breathing because the muscles that typically keep the airway open end up relaxing and collapsing while sleeping, blocking the airway.

Often, people with sleep apnea do not know they have the condition but realize that they snore and occasionally wake up gasping for air. Frequently it is their sleep partner who will urge them to go to the doctor.

The World Health Organization estimates that 100 million people worldwide suffer from OSA. Left untreated, it can lead to fatigue, early morning headaches, irritability, lack of concentration and contributes to depression, learning and memory difficulties. Importantly, recent studies have also shown that OSA is associated with high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, stroke and diabetes.

Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, worn with a nasal mask, is currently the gold standard for the treatment of OSA and is extremely effective at treating OSA when worn as directed.  However, up to 50% of all patients are not compliant with CPAP therapy due to the cumbersome nature of the treatment.

Provent® Therapy was developed as a small nasal device to help patients who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy. This discreet and non-invasive technology requires neither mask nor machine. “In Asia, Provent® Therapy has been received positively in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, and to date, over 1 million units have been sold globally,” said Richard Ayllon, Director of Global Business Development, Theravent Inc.

“We are pleased to introduce Provent® Therapy for our sleep physicians and their patients in Singapore,” added Richard Saw, Regional Business Director of Somnotec. “For those who are currently not treating their disease and are looking for alternatives, or even those who want a travel-friendly device, the availability of Provent® Therapy will tremendously impact their lives.”
